Abstract
Tectono-Stratigraphic review of the outer sector of the north Abruzzi Apennines: new data from the 339-Teramo sheet of the Carta Geologica d'Italia (CARG Project).
This short note reports the new data collected during the survey of the 1:50.000 scale Teramo sheet (CARG Project) on the Messinian-Pleistocene siliciclastic successions cropping out in the northern sector of the periadriatic Abruzzi region.
The stratigraphic review of these successions and the study of their spatial relationships led to a partial redefinition of the main regional structural units and of their deformation timing.
In particular, as regards the aforesaid topics, the main results can be resumed in the following points:
• exemplification of the overall frame of the turbiditic successions which, on the basis of new biostratigraphic and petrographic data, can be referred exclusively to the Laga and Cellino fms; no arguments suggesting the existence of intermediate units (as f.e. the Teramo Flysch Auctt.) have been confirmed;
• remarkable improvements in the internal stratigraphic subdivision of the 3 main outcropping fms (Laga, Cellino and Mutignano fms) through the recognition and the definition of several sub-units;
• detailed mapping of either the major thrust-traces bounding regional tectonic units, or the minor thrust-traces separating narrow tectonic elements;
• mapping of the Middle Pliocene and Late Pliocene unconformities characterising the Mutignano fm and definition of the temporal extent of the associated hiatuses;
• pointing out chronological constraints for the nucleation of the contractional structures and inferences about their influence on the coeval syn-tectonic basins.
