Abstract
The CARG project in Basilicata Region: tectono-stratigraphy of the Pisticci 507 and Rotondella 523 sheets.
The stratigraphic and structural features of the outermost sector of the Apenninic Chain, exposed in the Pisticci and Rotondella sheets are shortly described. The sheets are located on the innermost part of the Bradanic Foredeep, characterized by a thick pelitic-sandy Pliocene-Pleistocene sequence. The Apenninic margin of the foredeep is characterized by the frontal wedge of the chain interbedded inside the Pliocene-Pleistocene cover. That is named Metaponto Nappe and is composed of allochthonous units of the Apenninic Chain and of Pliocene sediments more or less coeval with the Bradanic Foredeep cover. The Apenninic Chain is composed of several nappes completely detached and resting onto a deep seated thrust system (the Apulian thrust system), deformed since Tortonian contemporarily with the Tyrrhenian opening. The contribution of the CARG consists in a fundamental improvement of the geological knowdlege and the correlation between the field work and the subsurface data, obtained by the petroleoum researches, that allowed to reconstruct the geodynamic evolution of this area and to understand the relationship between the chain and the foredeep. The CARG project provides informations useful for the geological risks.
