Abstract
The territory of Cutrofiano (Salento) is known for an intense mining activity, that is supposed to induce subsidence and sinkhole phenomena. By means of a geological, hydro-geological and geotechnical analysis, the present work aims at clarifying the connection between quarry activites and instabilities. In particular, numerical simulations have been carried out in order to evaluate the stability of tunnels and wells typically observed in the area under investigation. Such simulations demonstrate that subsidence and sinkhole phenomena are not necessarily produced by the tunnel excavation.
