Abstract
The mechanics of a rock mass depend on the characteristics of the intact lithotype, the geometric pattern of discontinuities, the parameters of discontinuity, and its tensional state. The evident pervasive stratification plays a fundamental role in determining the mechanical behaviour of the Biancone Formation. Minimal failures occur when strata are plane-parallel, and they become significant with different orientations of the stratification and/or in the presence of master joints.
The Biancone formation in the area surrounding Feltre underwent a complex deformation and tensional history due to folding, fracturing, load and unload events. Many engineering works in the Feltre area interact with this formation, which exhibits a predominantly transversely isotropic behaviour.
