During the First World War Manlio and Bruno Castiglioni volunteered in the alpine troops and were sent on the Dolomite military front in the Adamello-Presanella Group. After the war, Manlio took charge in cartographic job and in his major works figure the Great International Atlas published by the Touring Club Italiano. Bruno, instead, devoted himself to physical geography and deepened the problems of the last glacial maximum expansion in the Alps.
