Environmental pollution along the Ionian Coast in Punta Alice area, Cirò Marina (Kr), Italy: preliminary results

Luigi Spezzano
The infiltration of heavy metals into soils is one of the most important soil pollution sources. The aim of this study is to determine the metals concentrations in soil around the ex Montedison industrial settlement. This industry, located in the Punta Alice area, until the 2008 produced hyper-pure sodium chloride. The sodium was obtained from the raw brine collected in the Mine Timpa del Salto, located in Belvedere Spinello. The presence of the factory, nowadays abandoned, is a disturbing element in the natural landscape of Punta Alice. In addition, it caused conditions of gradual pollution due to the presence of dangerous chemical elements and derivatives of the industrial activities. The research is based on the environmental impact study through field survey operations and soils sampling for a chemical characterization using ICP-MS analysis.

Abstract

The infiltration of heavy metals into soils is one of the most important soil pollution sources. The aim of this study is to determine the metals concentrations in soil around the ex Montedison industrial settlement.
